Customer interview synthesis

Last tested 2026-04-26 Part of AI Prompts for Product Managers
Read the raw customer interview transcripts below. Produce:

1. The top 5 themes ranked by frequency (number of interviews where the theme appeared). For each theme, give 2-3 verbatim quotes - exact words, not paraphrased.
2. 3-5 Jobs-to-be-Done candidates surfaced from the patterns, in the format 'When I {situation}, I want to {motivation}, so I can {outcome}.'
3. Anything that surprised you - a signal that contradicts the assumed pain points or that came up unprompted in multiple interviews.

If I've pasted fewer than 3 transcripts, refuse and ask for more - 3 is the minimum for a real signal.

Why it works

Customer interview synthesis is the single biggest opportunity gap in PM AI work - the 2026 Lenny's survey shows a 27-point gap between current usage (4.7%) and desired usage (31%). This is the prompt that closes it. Paste raw transcripts, get themes ranked by frequency with verbatim quotes, plus JTBD candidates extracted from the patterns. The verbatim quotes matter - they prevent the model from paraphrasing customer pain into generic marketing-speak, and they give you copy you can quote in PRDs and stakeholder updates. Run this monthly on your last 5-10 interviews and you'll have a continuously-updated map of customer pain that beats any persona doc. Tested cleanest on Claude Opus 4.7 (handles 30k+ word transcripts without losing detail).

Example output

Themes ranked by frequency across 7 interviews:

1. Setup friction (mentioned in 6/7):
- 'I gave up after the third config screen.'
- 'Why does this need so many permissions just to start?'
- 'I came back two weeks later and forgot where I left off.'

2. Trust gap on data accuracy (5/7):
- 'I cross-checked the numbers in our existing dashboard before I believed them.'
- 'How do I know this is actually what shipped?'

3. Workflow handoff confusion (4/7):
- 'My designer doesn't see what I see.'
- 'We end up in Slack debating what the AI suggested.'

JTBD candidates surfaced:
- 'When I open this on Monday, I want to pick up where I left off, so I don't lose 10 minutes re-orienting.'
- 'When I share output with my team, I want them to trust it without re-running the analysis themselves.'

Common mistakes

Don't paste fewer than 3 transcripts - the model will pattern-match on noise and produce confident themes from a sample of one. Don't let it paraphrase quotes ('a user expressed concern about onboarding') - push back if it does. Verbatim quotes are the gold; paraphrased quotes are dead on arrival when you try to use them in a PRD. Also: the JTBD section will sometimes invent a job that wasn't really there. Treat those as candidates to verify in the next interview, not as conclusions.
